One of my most favorite yarns of all time!

Hue & Me yarn has been one of my absolute favorites to work with. Hue & Me was created by Alexi Tavel with Lion Brand Yarn a few years ago, and has been an incredible source of inspiration throughout my journey with fiber. The bulky (5) weight of this yarn, combined with its Acrylic+Wool content made it a great option to explore knit and crochet projects. In some projects I used 9mm or 10mm needles, for others 8mm, and for some beanies a 6.5mm set of needles. With around 30 colors the options are endless. Each unique skein has the ability to stand on its own as a solid, and compliment another color when paired together. Working with this yarn has allowed me to explore color, create commissions for friends, and learn through trial and error many times while navigating the many creations I want to make with a less than ideal budget.

And now for story time…

During graduate school I moved from North Carolina to Michigan (11 hour drive or 90 minute plane trip) and the transition was not the easiest. Learning a new location, preparing for a new career, and also learning a new skill in knitting was simultaneously thrilling and at times overwhelming. I found this yarn just before my first winter holiday break. I followed twoofwands on Instagram and saw the yarn for most of the fall. When I made an after work trip to Joann for some last minute gift making yarn I saw Hue+Me on the shelf and bought the colors Love song and Bellini. I went home, made a snood for mom and was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to work with. After my family was pleasantly surprised with the variety of color options online and the warmth of the gifts I made I decided to go on the hunt for more. Mom accompanied me to Joann that fateful evening in December when I stocked up and bought enough yarn for a whole project and some for fun. Little did I know this would be the start of a wonderful relationship with this yarn.

Many fiber artists know once you’ve found your fiber (yarn, fabric, medium of choice) you cant get enough. We often joke that if they discontinue it we don’t know what we would do, but I think we do know how we would feel; grief, sadness, longing and lonely. The familiarity to the touch, and at times surprise and awe the yarn brings as we work with it feels like a friendship. We know the yarn, can begin to know and predict how it will “act” and can also be amazed when it does something incredible we didn’t know it could do (insert first time making a crochet pumpkin with it).

Hue & Me is a comforting friend I found at home in NC that I was able to take with me back up to Michigan. I could find it at any Joann, here or there, and many pieces I created with this yarn hold immense sentimental value. My creations with this yarn serve as a sort of woven in, time stamped memory of where I was on my journey, geographically and mentally. There are and probably always will be some Hue & Me WIPS in a bin, frogging to be done, and ideas in my mind of Hue & Me creations waiting to take shape.
